Liver cancer Information
As a cancer caused by abnormal growth of liver cells, liver cancer is classified into primary liver cancer and metastatic liver cancer. The former originates in the patients' liver and is common in tropics such as coastal areas of China, Hong Kong, Guangxi, Taiwan and Vietnam. The latter is the result of metastasis from tumors in other organs such as large intestine, pancreas, stomach, lung, etc..
Liver cancer symptoms
- Loss of appetite
- Loss of weight without any reason
- Jaundice
- Abdominal distension caused by ascites
- Pain in upper abdomen and right shoulder
Liver cancer risk factors
- Hepatitis, such as hepatitis B/C
- Hepatic cirrhosis
- Intake of toxic chemicals
- Heavy alcohol use for a long time
- Long-term exposure to environmental pollutants (eg. PVC)
Diagnosis
- X-ray and ultrasound scan
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Laparoscopy
- Liver biopsy
Treatment
Surgical excision, ablation therapy, radioembolization and liver transplant.
