Throat cancer Information
Throat cancer, a digestive system cancer, can be classified into four types - supraglottic cancer, which originates from the root of the lingual surface of epiglottis; glottic cancer, which originates from the vocal cord; subglottic cancer, which originates beneath the vocal cord; and transglottic cancer, which originates from the laryngeal ventricle.
Throat cancer symptoms
- Hoarseness
- Vocal cord polyp
- Coughing with blood in sputum
- Discomfort in swallowing
Throat cancer risk factors
- Smoking
- Heavy alcohol use
- Air pollution
- Often speaking loudly
- Prolonged exposure to chemicals, such as formaldehyde, pesticides, textile and leather fibers and asbestos, etc.
Diagnosis
- Indirect laryngoscopy
- CT scan
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
Treatment
Primarily radiotherapy and surgical excision, or a combination of both.
