Leukemia Treatment
Leukemia

Commonly known as “blood cancer”, it usually originates in the bone marrow, causing massive proliferation of abnormal white blood cells. Under normal circumstances, hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow gradually divide into different cells such as red blood cells and white blood cells. Any abnormality in the process, however, would produce abnormal blood cells that circulate in the blood. There are four types of leukemia: chronic lymphocytic leukemia, chronic myeloid leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and acute myeloid leukemia.

Treatment
Chemotherapy
It is performed by giving intravenous injection to the patients to kill cancerous blood cells. But it is not applicable to chronic myeloid leukemia and may cause permanent damages to the hematopoietic system.
Targeted therapy
By targeting and eliminating specific leukemia cancer cells, the therapy reduces the damage to normal cells and thus the side effects. However, it is not applicable to acute myeloid leukemia.
Hematopoietic stem cell transplant
Commonly known as “bone marrow transplant”, it is performed by drawing blood from a donor to extract hematopoietic stem cells and then transplanting the cells into the patient’s bone marrow, so as to maintain the hematopoietic function.
