Ovarian cancer Treatment
Ovarian cancer

Ovarian cancer often occurs in ovaries after menopause. It is a common type of cancer among women in Hong Kong. There are nearly 400 new cases of ovarian cancer on average every year, accounting for 3.5% of all cancers among women, and deaths caused by ovarian cancer accounted for 3% of cancer deaths among all women.

Treatment
Surgical excision
As the most effective therapy, it usually starts with omentectomy, followed by removal of the upper abdominal tumor, uterine appendages, pelvic mass, and lymph nodes, before tackling the tumors in the gastrointestinal tract and appendix. However, patients may become infertile after surgery.
Chemotherapy
There are many chemotherapeutic drugs for ovarian cancer, and most treatments involve simultaneous use of multiple drugs. Chemotherapy plays an important role in treating advanced ovarian cancer.
Targeted therapy
Targeted therapy drugs that inhibit angiogenesis, when applied on patients with recurrent ovarian cancer, can achieve a response rate of 80% and reduce the risk of exacerbation by 52%. The drugs also significantly relieve symptoms attributable to ascites including abdominal distension, abdominal pain, difficulty breathing, asthma and poor mobility, so as to improve their quality of life.
